Dear LPES Families Welcome back to the 2011 -12 school year! I hope that you all had a great summer and found some time to enjoy together as a family. I am very excited this year for our new school year to begin. We have been working very hard this summer to prepare for students in the fall. As we enter our second year of being a K-6th grade school, we are all excited about the opportunities offered for our students. If you are new to LPES, you will soon find that our community of learners, parents and teachers is truly like no other. We welcome parents and family members into our school and are happy to help or assist you in any way possible. If you are looking for volunteer opportunities, our PTO will be sending out information regarding volunteering and participating in activities. Our Building Accountability Committee (BAC) also meets monthly as an advisory group. Contact information for PTO, BAC, and other groups will be provided in our monthly “Eagle’s View” newsletter, which is distributed electronically, or by request in a hard copy. Additionally, we utilize our parent email list to provide you with information between our newsletters. Last year, Lewis-Palmer Elementary School was recognized as both a John Irwin Award Winning School and as a Governor’s Distinguished Improvement award-winner. The John Irwin Award recognizes schools whose students score in the top 8% in the state on state assessments. The Governor’s Distinguished School award recognizes schools whose student growth rates are in the top 8% of schools in the state. Only thirty schools across the state received both awards! Although we continue to be very pleased with the results of student assessments and the growth of our students, we recognize that there is always room for improvement. To that end, we will be focusing on academic vocabulary instruction in the area of literacy, as well as insuring that our curriculum is aligned with the new Colorado Academic Standards/Common Core State Standards. Our teachers will be engaged in weekly Professional Learning Communities designed to improve teaching and learning.
